How to carve the Patriot |
||||
| I have received countless emails over
the years asking for more information on how I do my wood carvings. Here
are some pictures of the stages "The Patriot" wood carving went
through, towards it's completion. Unfortunantly I didn't capture any pictures
of the bolt of wood being set. |

It always starts with a drawing. |

| Here is the final wood carving of the beaver known
as "The Patriot" before it was painted red for the Canadian
flag. |

It is very difficult to describe in words
what it takes to create a wood carving. In the beginning it is just an
idea, and from there comes the research to find out all the details of
the item to be carved. The selection of wood is just as important in carving
the wood art. Oak is one of the harder woods, but it does have a tendency
to want to spit and chip. It feels like the carving is all ready inside
the wood and I just have to find it. By chipping away at all the peices
that are NOT part of the carving, the wood art appears. |
